Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present an activity that was carried out within the scope of two curricular units – Spanish A2 and French A2 – of the Foreign Languages and Cultures course at the Porto School of Education. This work focuses on teaching specific lexicon and grammatical content such as the definite article, agreement and comparison of adjectives, possessive adjectives, prepositions, topic-specific verbs and the use of the simple past tense to write a biography, all common to both languages. The proposed activities were worked on individually and in groups. The teaching unit allowed students to get to know several French-speaking and Hispanic-American painters, who explored self-portraits and the body, which were, in many cases, unknown to the students. In this context, the use of authentic materials (paintings, articles and audios) played an essential role in broadening the students' knowledge of both the languages and the cultures involved. The strategies adopted in the teaching-learning process will be addressed, with a focus on the development of communicative skills in language, in accordance with the parameters defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Finally, the results of this experience which main objective was, the effective practice of the language, will be discussed and presented in detail.
