THE INCLUSION OF PEOPLE WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Abstract

The inclusion of people with Additional Support Needs (ASN) is a fundamental pillar in building fairer, more equitable, and participatory societies. Beyond its recognition in the educational sphere, inclusion must be understood as a broad and transformative social process that spans multiple sectors and requires the active involvement of various stakeholders. This article offers a critical reflection on inclusion as a driver of social transformation, analysing the role of educational professionals, specialised technicians, community agents, and public policies in promoting full participation and the empowerment of these individuals. Concrete examples of initiatives developed in Portugal and the European context are presented, illustrating intersectoral and interprofessional collaboration strategies, as well as the challenges and opportunities they face. It is argued that effective inclusion requires a strong ethical, political, and professional commitment capable of transforming structures, promoting self-determination, and repositioning people with additional support needs as protagonists of social change.
