VOLUMES NO QUOTIDIANO: O USO DE MATERIAIS CONCRETOS E MANIPULÁVEIS NO ENSINO DE VOLUMES

This study, conducted with 18 sixth-grade students (ages 11–12), investigated how the use of Base Ten Blocks (MAB) and the connection between mathematics and everyday life contribute to the understanding of the concept of volume. The main objectives were: to promote the construction of the volume concept using MAB; to implement tasks contextualized in students’ daily lives; and to analyze the impact of manipulatives on learning the topic “3D figures,” as outlined in the Essential Learning Goals for Mathematics.
Adopting a qualitative approach, data were collected through direct observation, video recordings, document analysis, and focus group interviews. The results indicated that the use of concrete materials, such as MAB and everyday objects, may facilitate the transition from a practical and tangible understanding to a more abstract and formal one, including the use of mathematical formulas. The methodologies adopted promoted student autonomy, strengthened the connection between theory and practice, and emphasized the relevance of using manipulatives in learning complex geometric concepts.
