This paper presents a study of discourse representation in fiction based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics and the methodological approach of Corpus Linguistics with the use of the software WordSmith Tools. The analysis is centered upon the ideational metafunction of language realized by the transitivity system. More specifically, it focuses on the mental processes and the logical-semantic relation of projection. The aim was to verify how the thoughts of the characters in the fictional corpus are represented through an analysis of a prototypical verb of mental process in English, the reporting verb THINK and its counterpart in Portuguese PENSAR, searching for patterns in their use in each novel of the corpus.
