In the present article, starting from a real case developed in the context of Mental Health, the assumptions of the relationship of help and, above all, the role played by the professional in this relation will be evidenced.
In a relationship of help, the professional must be open and available to listen and empathically and holistically understand the person with whom he / she intervenes, particularly if the person has a mental illness. More than his illness, the professional must see the human being before him, with problems, with needs, but also with skills and a huge potential to develop, autonomize and empower. And it is in a relationship of closeness and trust, which is built up over time, that the professional can help her in her process of change, believing in her, co-owning her and giving her power.
The technical-scientific knowledge, although fundamental, is not sufficient in itself, since on the basis of the intervention of the professional of aid relationship it is imperative that they be implicated as a person with the fullness and authenticity of their being.
By the relational and affective dimension of this work, the professional is challenged to constantly manage the emotions, own and the other, that are experienced in the course of this process. By recognizing what each one feels and the influence of the emotions in the relational process, the performance of the professional will be more considered, bringing, consequently, benefits for the relationship itself and for the development and empowerment of the subjects.
