About the Journal
The Research Center for Music Psychology and Musical Education (CIPEM) was created by the Music area of the Arts and Human Motricity department of the Higher School of Education of the Porto Polytechnic Institute, in 1998. Its formalisation took place within the scope of the first Autumn School that took place between September 30th and October 3rd, 1998. National teachers/researchers and prominent members of the international scientific community in relevant research areas of Music Psychology and Music Education participated in the Autumn School
During the Autumn School a series of important and pertinent studies for the construction of critical reflection in music were presented and discussed in front of a considerable number of musicians interested in this field of reflection. As a result of the work carried out, a series of theoretical texts and research reports were produced whose importance transcended the event itself, the first Autumn School.
In order to respond to the multiple scientific and pedagogical requests addressed to them, CIPEM launched, during its second Autumn School, the first issue of a journal called Music, Psychology and Education Journal, dedicated to the contributions mentioned above.
The main objective of its editorial project is to promote, develop and deepen the dialogue between the knowledge of Educational Sciences and Music at a national level, using as a reference written international research and presentations at conferences, symposiums and seminars in the specialty.
Collaboration in the journal is open to any teacher/researcher, national or foreign, who has developed reflections in the area in which the journal proposes to work. Proposed articles will always be subject to prior peer review to verify whether their content corresponds to the objectives of this publication, namely:
- disseminate and enable access to knowledge and to the most recent research to all who work in the areas of Music, and Educational Sciences and who take the Music Education, Music and Education and Music in the Community as their field of study and research;
- provide a space for those who work in the areas of Music, and Educational Sciences and who take the Music Education, Music and Education and Music in the Community for exchanging and debating ideas and information;
- promote, either on its pages or through the organisation of other activities, an a posteriori rationality of the practices carried out, formally and informally, in the field of Music Education, Music and Education and Music in the Community.
The Music, Psychology and Education Journal, which will have a predominance of the Portuguese language, is free access, without any monetary or other charges for the authors and with a permanent open reception of articles – submission in continuous flow. The journal will be published annually in two volumes, in digital format and in paper format, the latter only by print-on-demand request.
Articles to be submitted for peer review may be of four types, with the following designations and guidelines:
- Scientific Articles – prepared by professors or researchers whose field of reflection falls within the scope of the journal’s objectives;
- Archive Articles – publication of articles whose contents have proven to be fundamental for reflection on Music Psychology, Music Education and Music in the Community and which have not been given the relevance they deserve in Portugal;
- Articles Reviews – reviews of books or articles published in Portugal or abroad whose content covers issues in the field of Music Education, Music and Education and Music in the Community and which are in line with the journal's area of intervention;
- Articles in Training – prepared by young researchers as part of a master's or doctoral work in collaboration and by proposal of the respective scientific advisor.
It is expected that the Journal's target audiences, are teachers and researchers in the areas of Music and Educational Sciences, i) teachers at all levels of education, both generic and specialised music education; ii) students of courses in Musical Sciences, Music Teaching, Music, and Educational Sciences; iii) master's and doctoral students in these same areas; iv) and students from teacher and educator training schools, both at the initial and continuing training level.
With this initiative, CIPEM | INET – md hopes not only to contribute to the bibliographic potential applicable in the pedagogical context, but also to open an innovative space for dissemination and scientific achievement in these areas in Portugal.
