The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of choice on the perceived choice, task motivation and persistence of twenty Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language. Within the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2006, 2017), two tasks on the same topic were manipulated in the number of choices ("+choice" vs."-choice"). A questionnaire was applied to analyze perceived choice, perceived competence, belonging, intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, introjected regulation and persistence. Inferential statistics’ results showed that there were no significant differences between the groups ("± choice"). A correlational analysis showed positive correlations between intrinsic motivation and persistence and between identified regulation and persistence in both groups (with choice and without choice); a positive correlation was found between introjected regulation and persistence in the group with choice. Results are interpreted and discussed according to the theoretical framework (i.e., self-determination theory) and taking into account some assumptions regarding learners' cultural background
