Abstract

Porto, a liberal city. How many of us have heard this expression? Myth or reality? In this article we intend to verify who were the personalities that carried out the manifestations pro-absolutists and the pro-liberal demonstrations within the walls of the city of Porto, not only focusing on their leaders but also on the ones who actively participated in these demonstrations; to verify if throughout our research, which begins with the formation of the Sanhedrin in 1818 and ends with the executions of May 7th, 1829 (Mattoso, 1993), whether the different personalities remained faithful to the faction or changed according to their needs. To this end, some structural questions were raised, namely: Who were these supporters? Did they always support the same faction? In what way did they support them? What consequences did this historical episode bring to these supporters? With this study it was possible for us to fulfil the aims that we proposed within this study, i.e., to verify that the city of Porto was not alien to the national situation, and that the riots carried out throughout the country also had repercussions among the populations that lived in the Urbe.
