Decree-Law No. 176/2014 of December 12 introduced the teaching of English in the 1st cycle from the 3rd year and established a new recruitment group of teachers explicitly for this purpose. The diploma does not mention the ways of integrating and articulating the subject with other curricular areas, nor the possible collaborative work that English teachers can develop with class teachers. The present study, carried out among students of teacher training courses in the 1st cycle of ensino básico and primary education in the universities of Algarve and Seville, had as main objective to determine the extent to which future teachers are available to collaborate with the English teacher, in order to ensure greater integration of the different curricular areas that make up this teaching cycle. The study reveals that Portuguese students do not value the foreign language very much in the curriculum of the 1st cycle, they hesitate about the possibility of integrated teaching of foreign language and curricular areas, and are little prone to the collaborative work with the English teacher. To participate, they prefer to provide support in the management of behaviors and skills related to understanding.
