Fernando Lopes-Graça presented, in 1931, in a contest for professor of Solfeggio at the National Conservatory, a critical dissertation - Refutation of some erroneous principles that intend to invalidate the pedagogical efficiency of intoned solfeggio - on the pedagogical doctrines of Teófilo Saguer, professor of the discipline of Solfeggio in this establishment, which were expressed in a brochure published that same year - Musical Pedagogy. The Teaching of Solfeggio. In this dissertation, which was not debated because Lopes-Graça was forced to miss the contest, the composer reveals a modern, innovative, resistant and interventionist thought about the value and pedagogical purposes of learning in music, in general, and of aural training, in particular. The text presented has the fundamental purpose of making known and (re)interpreting, through a comparative content analysis, this historical debate of the 1930s of the 20th century, on pedagogical thought and the discipline of Aural Training, or Solfeggio, within the scope of specialized music teaching in Portugal.
