Abstract

This article presents the results of an Intervention Program for the development of
Vocational Maturity and Promotion of Community Attitudes in Young People and Adolescents
in a Locality, in southern Mozambique, with the aim of analyzing the representations of studies
and the factors that influence choices and attitudes. In addition to 35 influential individuals who
participated in the socialization meeting and the collective interview (focus group), we included
47 young people and adolescents of both sexes in the study, 31 from the experimental group and
16 from the control group. The Vocational Development Inventories (CDI – Career
Development Inventory) and the Self-Directed Exploration Inventories (SDS – Self Directed
Search) were administered, as well as the Post-Intervention Questionnaire. During the
implementation of the program, young people and adolescents participated in the collective
interview, interacted with various professionals and influential individuals from/in their
communities and filled out worksheets. The results of the CDI, the SDS and the content analysis
formed the basis for capturing the nuances and effects of the program. The data showed that the
representations of parents, guardians and other family members are important elements for the
attitudes of children, students and other young people and adolescents, in the face of choices,
studies and vision of the future. We found that career intervention programs promote planned
exploration in subjects and clarify the important elements in solving vocational tasks, namely,
self-knowledge and the need to obtain information about studies, courses and professions.
