Abstract

In my research I expose the theme of slavery, aiming at the (re)construction and analysis of the legal regime applicable to people subjected to slavery when freed in Portugal and in the territories under Portuguese administration. The problem of the application (or lack thereof) of norms was raised, especially in colonial territory.I try to provide an overview in this first part, focusing on the legal status of slaves and their liberation by manumission or by judicial means.  In the second part I explore the matter of the legal abolition of slavery and the legal status of the freed people.
