In this work, we intend to describe and analyze how the Chinese preposition “ba” is translated into Portuguese. As a preposition, “ba” combines with the post-positioned part, presenting a very common structure in modern Chinese, in which the object is placed before the regent verb. The difficulty in finding correspondence in other languages is the reason for this work. In order to verify the possible tendencies for their conversion into Portuguese translation, we used a parallel corpus consisting of bilingual texts, with Chinese being the source language and Portuguese as the target language. Through the analysis of the examples in the corpus regarding the use of this preposition, we seek to synthesize the tendencies of its translation into Portuguese. In more concrete terms, our analysis approaches the topic from the syntactic as well as the lexical perspective, focusing on the possible changes in translation, as well as their reasons. As a new paradigm in the translation field, translational study based on corpora can offer many advantages so that translators in training can more easily master the corresponding relation at lexical and phrasal levels between different languages and the corresponding strategies and methods to be engaged in translating.
