The most important instrument used by media to carry vital information is expressed by writing. In this sense, the effect of the new ideologies upon African-Brazilian identity influence the literary discourses and later it is directed to a receptive and less specialized public. The present article discusses the relationship between the Literature of Cordel and some of the political strategies elaborated by the subaltern people, their negotiation with the hegemonic power and the revitalization of the genre Cordel, its new themes and characters. One can observe that these new narrators are fully conscious of their political roles in front of their community. Circulating in a geographical urban space this literary production is free, its production does not depend on the economical condition of its readers to buy it. Contrary to the traditional literature the real and the verisimilar possesses defined objects, such as to inform, to inform and to teach the common people about the Law. In this case the Literature of Cordel fulfills classical objectives by aligning noble functions and therefore provoking “social catharsis” in the individuals by helping them to become citizens.
