This article aims at reflecting upon the importance of reading stories that promote the moral and ethical development of children. Drawing on the confusion between values and opinions and on the difficulties to endorse ethics in an anti-ethical world, we comment on the relevance of storytelling as a ritual – either at bedtime or during the day – and of therapy through (fairy) tales. The reflection and awareness that come out of reading particular stories – of which examples are provided – enable children to acquire solid references and thus play a safekeeping role in relation to themselves, other people, the nature and the world.
