The war in the Middle East and the role of artificial intelligence in disinformation

Abstract

The intensification of contemporary conflicts has been accompanied by significant changes in the information ecosystem, particularly with the growing use of artificial intelligence. In the context of the war in the Middle East, disinformation has emerged as a central phenomenon, driven by the technological capacity to produce and disseminate manipulated content. This article offers a critical reflection on this phenomenon, analysing three fundamental dimensions: the automated production of false content, algorithmic amplification on digital platforms, and the cognitive effects associated with exposure to disinformation. The analysis demonstrates that AI not only increases the volume of misleading information but also alters the way in which conflicts are perceived. The discussion explores implications and possible responses, highlighting the need for integrated approaches that combine regulation, technology and media literacy.
