The influence of social media on physical activity and motor performance

In recent years, social media has become an intense part of the daily lives of children, adolescents, and young adults, influencing habits, behaviours, and ways of living. This article reflects on the relationship between social media, physical activity, and motor performance, arguing that this influence exists, although not in a linear way. When social media use is associated with high screen time and more passive patterns of engagement, it tends to promote sedentary behaviour and reduce opportunities for movement. At the same time, these platforms may also expose users to content, communities, and practices related to exercise, motivation, and health. The article therefore argues that this is an ambivalent relationship, depending on age, context of use, intensity of engagement, and the balance between digital time and real bodily experiences. In this sense, it becomes important to strengthen digital literacy and to value physical activity.References
