This article is devoted to a brief analysis of cultural policies and the cultural field in Brazil. To this end, it establishes a time frame of the Lula government (2003-2010) at the beginning of the Jair Bolsonaro government (2019). The objective is to make a brief historical reconstruction of the policies for a culture in the period of analysis and to understand the lived processes, the transformation that took place in the cultural field, the economic-political and conjunctural movements until the currentperiod. The problem is to verify the understanding and the role of culture in the State’s agenda in the analyzed period, considering the historical perception, the advances, thecontinuities, the discontinuities and the current challenges. The methodology is bibliographic, based on scholars who think of culture without contemporary capitalism
