This article aims to provide a theoretical base for reflecting on gender, online activism and cyberspace, focusing on its emancipatory potential. Despite derogatory images, discourses and gender stereotypes being spread by media and the Internet, the latter can also be seen as a tool for identity negotiation, protesting and social change. Access to media and digital technology is here considered relevant so marginalised groups can create democratic spaces, bringing the private sphere closer to the public sphere –sharing information and knowledge and empowering women for action. Women are underrepresented in decision-making and leadership roles, especially in the fields of politics, economics and communication. Thus, it is essential that other channels and means of information –such as cyberspace –allow other voices to emerge, in new contexts of activism and fight for women’s rights.
