About conduct of nineteenth-century woman in a stalemate between wants and punishments, this article aims to analyze the identity of the female characters in the text of Eça de Queirós, basedon feminist theories, with the object of study to workO Primo Basílio (1878). Subsequently, this study makes a parallel with ideology “being a woman” in the postmodern world. This research uses as a theoretical framework Bauman (2005), Beauvoir (1980), Butler (2003), Hall (2006), Moisés (2008), Reis (2007) e Saraiva &Lopes (2005). We conclude that, given the contradictions involved in the female figuration, it is important to deconstruct fixed identities so that it review the conservative idea of identity.
