The ethnic and cultural diversity that characterises the population of Western countries poses various questions and challenges to which the various states seek to respond. Solutions to the different problems must reconcile the principles of freedom and equality, basic pillars of democracy, and are not always easy to achieve. However, the variety of cultures that make up these countries constitutes a joint multicultural heritage, which must be respected and preserved, and it is on this assumption that resolutions must be found. It is not enough for a society to be multicultural. Diversity will only represent an asset if the various communities are interconnected with each other and the relationships they maintain are of partnership, flexibility and interdependence. This is the idea that should be behind any decision, because it is the key that opens borders, overcomes challenges and manages to build and maintain intercultural societies.
