The transformations of Muslim female identity require us to look increasingly at the path they are taking in Islamic culture. Migration to the West has redefined the cultural identity and citizenship of contemporary Muslim women. In view of such facts, it seems important to compare the reality of Muslim women in Portugal with the reality prevailing in Islamic societies. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the westernization of Muslim women through strategies of reconstruction of their identity processes (Abranches, 2004) has led to a reunion with the true female identity stipulated by the Koran.
