The image of Native American Indians conveyed by the media has only in recent years separated them from the stereotype of "uncivilized savages" and has come to portray them as peoples of rich cultures. In an attempt to pay homage to the peoples native to North America, this article highlights the cultural practices of the Sioux tribe and contextualises about US government policies to "civilise" native peoples. The preservation of peoples' traditions is of utmost importance, not only within Cultural Studies, but because these are rich cultures belonging to the history of humanity.
