Abstract

For four decades, publications related to the repressive and persecutory military dictatorship in Portugal were censored. One of the mainstays of the regime, this was practiced in all media. Books and writing were no exception. Authors subject to censorship were forced to use pseudonyms and translators were forced to become "non-existent". Even though the role of the translator has improved, it has always been undervalued, and translation seen as a mere stage in the typographical process. This book thus arises from the recognition of the lack of studies on the translator during the Estado Novo period. Published in 2009, "Translating in Portugal during the Estado Novo" is organised by Teresa Seruya, Maria Lin Moniz and Alexandra Assis Rosa. The publication covers various aspects and is an important contribution to the History of the Estado Novo.
