"Macunaíma – o herói sem nenhum caráter" - a classic Brazilian work from a Portuguese point of view

This article analyzes the iconic piece of Brazilian literature “Macunaíma – o herói sem nenhum caráter” by Mário de Andrade from the point of view of the European Portuguese. The focus of the analysis is based on the “underlying critique” of the work and in both popular culture and folklore as defining means of national identity. The following can be found in this article: an analysis of the work’s context, an outline of the literary plot; the interpretation of the hero; analysis of the satiric vision as well as the humorous tone of the work; and, finally, an interpretation and clarification of the work.
