Youth associations as a driver of Disruption and social change

Abstract

In the contemporary context, characterized by polysystemic crises and the urgent need to reconfigure traditional institutional responses, youth assumes a central role in the transformation and renewal of civic participation. This article analyzes youth associativism in Portugal not merely as a space for leisure, socialization, or sporadic volunteering, but rather as a structural engine of social change and a school of active citizenship that challenges generational stigmas of digital passivity and political apathy. This reflection discusses how institutional gaps and omissions are occupied by organic, grass-roots movements that transform urgent social causes — such as the mental health crisis and barriers to accessing decent housing- into axes of direct intervention and the co-production of public policies. Through a detailed review of classical and contemporary literature on citizen participation and the intersection of recent empirical data from the Portuguese context, the study demonstrates that the effectiveness of this dynamic lies in social innovation and the active involvement of citizens in horizontal networks. It is concluded that democratic resilience and the legitimacy of institutions depend on effectively combating purely symbolic participation and the full integration of young people as strategic partners in governance, deliberation, and change management.
