Sustainability was never discussed as much as it is nowadays. The growing concern on this topic is also followed by an increase of greenwashing. In this article the topic of greenwashing is introduced, exposing the main consequences to consumers, investors, companies, and the environment. It analyzes some of the factors that explain this phenomenon, as well as some possible solutions to tackle the problem. The two main causes that explain it are a total voluntary Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the (lack of) legislation. Some solutions include the raise of consumers’ awareness through Non-Governmental Organizations, a combination of voluntary and mandatory CSR, tripartism and training in leadership and ethics.
