The editorial competence of scientific editors is essential to guarantee quality in the management of academic journals. In the context of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), this competence is vital for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. This study aims to investigate the editorial skills and profile of the editors of the UFS Journal Portal in the use of Open Journal Systems (OJS). The research was conducted by means of descriptive research, using a qualitative-quantitative approach and the case study method. Data was collected between May and July 2024 using questionnaires addressed to the editors of the UFS Journal Portal. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was examined using Bardin's (2011) content analysis. The results highlighted the importance of skills such as effective communication, time management and technical knowledge when using OJS. In addition, analytical and critical skills, as well as flexibility and resilience, were considered fundamental. The survey revealed a significant lack of specific training in the use of OJS among editors. It is concluded that developing the editorial skills of the editors of the UFS Journal Portal is crucial to strengthening scientific communication. The insights gained provide a solid basis for the development of targeted training programs, contributing to the professionalization of scientific publishing at UFS and the advancement of science in the state of Sergipe.
