The research aims to discuss the concept of document, delimiting “letters” as the object of study and, among its specific objectives, it presents a theoretical framework on the concept of document and proposes a discussion on the letter as a documentary type in the field of Information Science. To this end, it carried out a bibliographical review, presenting the concept of document in Information Science based on versions by renowned authors. Characterized as exploratory, it has a qualitative approach. When retrieving various sources, emphasis was placed on materials that presented a reflection on the notion of document and that addressed letters as a document in the field of Information Science (whether in the universe of Archivology, Librarianship or Museology). It briefly describes the history of the concept of document, with a specific look at letters and their forms of representation, seeking to contribute to the debate.
